Online shopping is more popular than ever. And for mums balancing work and family, the internet has opened up the opportunity to present a professional shop front without the expense or time commitment of a high street store.
Sisters Joanna and Elizabeth from Kings Hill set up an online baby shop Prepmybaby in autumn 2011. They sell fun, innovative, organic and award-winning products for babies and mums, carefully selected by mums.
We spoke to them to find out more about their business and to gain their tips and advice for other would-be internet entrepreneurs.
Tell us how the business idea for Prepmybaby came about?
As sisters we had often discussed the idea of starting a business together, but up until now the right time had not presented itself. It was only when we found ourselves pregnant with due dates a few days apart that we began to seriously consider pooling our skills! Our boys were born just 2 days apart and after doing lots of baby shopping together we both struggled to find things we really liked, or that were just that bit different from what we saw on most high streets.
We settled upon the notion of ‘organic if possible’, simply because this is best for new baby skin and the environment. Lots of time was spent scouring the internet and making contact with suppliers. We also visited some of the London Trade Shows to further research what might be best for prepmybaby. We also talked to mums about their favourite must haves for their children and what they think is missing from the market. For most it was easy as we just fell in love with so much of what we saw and managed to road test a few items on unsuspecting new mums!
What is a typical day for you at Prepmybaby?
We keep up with the conversations on Twitter and Facebook as we have found these are invaluable for knowledge sharing and increasing traffic to our site. There are some great support networks out there for mum’s in business and small businesses in general and its great to see what everyone else is doing. We regularly tweet and update our followers each day on what we are doing, if we have any new products or are promoting anything like sales etc. We keep on top of the website by updating our blog and are always scanning the internet for new product ideas to add to our site. Then there are the general day to day admin duties of processing orders and paying the bills! All this of course whilst feeding and changing the kids!!
As your business is 100% internet based, how important is it to consider search engine optimisation?
This is very important to us as our website is our shop window. We have set up lots of google analytics tools to help us collect data on how our site is functioning and are continuously updating key words and adding links to improve our site performance. We check the analytics daily and do all we can to increase traffic to our site as hits mean sales. The challenge has been getting google to recognise our site and for us to stay up there in the listings. Its an ever changing world and you have to keep on top of it by making sure your site is optimised to its absolute full potential so it is ranked among the best….hopefully ours will be there one day!
It took quite a bit of brainstorming before we arrived at the concept of prepmybaby. We finally settled upon the idea of an online store that would sell all of the beautiful little finds that every newborn (and new mum!) might wish for, but struggle to find on the high street.
We researched the industry to see if it was booming and had room for another online baby shop, we decided it did so set about searching for products we wanted for our site. We decided on our ideal target audience and came up with an ethos.
We spent lots of evenings and days together (whilst the babies were sleeping) in between feeds and nappies, emailing potential suppliers for information and enquiring about trade accounts. So many were extremely helpful in giving us vital hints and tips along the way too. We learnt a lot. The website planning took the longest (around 4-5 months from concept to live). We designed it ourselves, designed the navigation and created the site map and pre-populated all the products. We found a local web company to build it but we did an awful lot of it ourselves and continue to manage it now we are up and running.
Research your market, make sure you have something you think there is a demand for. Talk to others in similar businesses, forums are great places to share ideas and information and test the waters a bit, also social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have a wealth of information from others running their own business. Bounce your ideas off your friends to see what they think as they should be very honest. There are lots of sites out there which have great tips and ideas for setting up new businesses too, these are worth delving into…the dragons have very good lists of do’s and don’ts!
Financially try and do as much self-financing as you can, getting loans in this financial climate can be dangerous as you never know how quickly you will get your return. It can take a good year or so to actually start generating profit so bear this in mind (depending on the type of business). Also have contingency and set a good lump aside for advertising. If you can, spend money on your website if this is your only means of selling as getting this right can really improve your chances, people need to be attracted to it and it has to work smoothly.
Be patient….the moment you press go is an amazing feeling but it takes time for businesses to grow and it takes a lot of commitment and hard work. Make sure you have a great support network around you who are comfortable knowing you might be working nights and weekends to get it off the ground. Go for it! If we hadn’t have taken the plunge we might never have. If your gut says it’s a good idea then do it, I’m a great believer in trusting instincts, if you have a good feeling about something, you should have the confidence to do it or you might just regret it. The right amount of determination, support and maybe a bit of luck can sometimes get you to the place you might have only once dreamed of.
How do you see Prepmybaby progressing over 2012?
We want this year to be our year, we are focused for a great 2012 and have lots of new ideas for the site and already a few new products lined up. Our long-term goal is to be the one stop online shop people come to for baby and mum products that are organic and just a little bit luxurious. So this is the year we work our hardest to help us in our journey to get there, and I’m sure next year we’ll work even harder.
If you had a magic wand and could grant one wish for your business, what would it be?
To be exactly where we are now as it wouldn’t be the same without all our hard work and dedication. It makes prepmybaby who it is and we are proud of that. But if there is a bit of fairy dust to sprinkle, maybe it can bring us the promise of further success for our business and continued satisfaction to those that shop with us.
